Op-ed: Why I'm Running

My Name is Jeffrey Brown and I write to you today announcing my campaign for Sheriff of Saratoga County.

I know how important the elected Sheriff is for our County, so I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you about my extensive experience in law enforcement so that I can earn your vote this November.

As a lifelong resident of Saratoga, I grew up in Malta and graduated from Shenendehowa High School. After earning my degree from Hudson Valley Community College I pursued what was the beginning of a lifelong and successful career serving Saratoga County at the Sheriff’s Office. Over my career, I worked out of the Malta, Clifton Park, Corinth and Halfmoon Stations and was a proactive Deputy, protecting our streets, making arrests and answering calls for service.

Early on in my career, I learned that I especially enjoyed criminal investigations, so I eventually took the Investigator exam and in 2005 was promoted by Sheriff Bowen to the rank of Investigator. I thoroughly enjoyed working as an Investigator, especially when it came to helping crime victims. I was involved in large investigations including homicides, burglaries and bank robberies.

I then took the exam to become a Lieutenant, scored the highest, and was promoted by Sheriff Zurlo. Sheriff Zurlo entrusted me with leading the Criminal Investigation Unit. As Lieutenant I led operations including wiretap investigations, homicides, missing persons, school threats, burglary sprees, and was also in charge of the hiring and background process for the Sheriff’s Office. I worked hard to significantly increase the training Investigators received.

In 2018, I was promoted to the rank of Captain and led the Criminal Investigation and Narcotics Units. I personally supervised many multijurisdictional cases including cyber threats, shootings, death investigations, larcenies and large-scale fraud investigations. I worked closely with our Local Police agencies, State and Federal partners. As a Captain, I expanded our program to assign members to federal task forces. Additionally, I taught new Investigators and Supervisors at the Zone Five Police Academy. In 2023 I received the Saratoga District Attorney’s Office’s Public Service Award for outstanding dedication and commitment to crime victims.

In 2023, I was promoted to Undersheriff, and became responsible for all five divisions within the Sheriff’s Office, +300 employees, and a $46 million budget, and to serve as Sheriff Zurlo’s principal representative at County, State and Federal meetings.

I know I am the most qualified person to hold this vitally important position for our County and Community. My character is solid, my career is unblemished, and I know what it takes to be a strong and unwavering Saratoga County Sheriff. That is why I have earned the full endorsement of our current Sheriff, Mike Zurlo.

I currently live in Clifton Park with my wife, Molly, and our two children. Molly is a third-grade teacher in the Shenendehowa School District, and our two children are active in local sports and school clubs.

I have a vested interest in keeping Saratoga County safe. Taking care of the members of the Sheriff’s Office and the community they serve is my top priority. Without the members of the Sheriff’s Office, we cannot protect and serve. A safe community comes from everyone working together.

I am humbly asking for your VOTE this November to secure Saratoga Sheriff’s Office with experience, leadership, and integrity.

Jeffrey Brown,
Saratoga Sheriff Candidate
